Orihuela ordered to compensate Costa bin men

Two court decisions have ordered Orihuela Town Hall to compensate ten workers employed by the rubbish collection service with a total of €102,716 for the additional travelling they have had to undertake for years from Orihuela city to the coast in order to get to work. The Town Hall will also have to cover part of their transport costs from this point in time.

Council spokesman Rafael Almagro explained that the workers complaints were made prior to 2012, when the service was taken ‘in-house’ and put under the control of the municipality.

The men complained then against the company that was in charge of the service at the time. However, after the municipalisation of the service is the Town Hall is now responsible for covering the compensation.

Of the decisions, one sentence awarded one worker – who made an individual complaint – compensation of  €10,307, and another presented by the CCOO workers union on behalf of nine workers ordered the Town Hall has to pay €92,409.

Councillor Almagro said the municipalisation of the service by the previous council had resulted in “unexpected costs at all levels”.
