Torrevieja Town Hall has received a subsidy from the provincial government in order to control the stray cat population. The subsidy amounts to €12,094.10, with which 185 cats will be sterilized.
The awarding of the grant was announced by Councillor of Animal Protection, Concha Sala, who explained that around 185 cats – half male, and half female – can be sterilised with the funding.
Once all the necessary services are coordinated, sterilization treatments will be carried out in collaboration with local veterinary clinics.
Councillor Sala said that this sterilisation programme will alleviate the massive increase in the birth of stray cats that she claims is a direct consequence of the unsuccessful management of the previous municipal government, which was unsuccessful in acquiring this same grant from the Diputación de Alicante.
Concha Sala argues that “castration and sterilisation is the only way to reduce the number of cats in the colonies on the streets of the town.” She is also convinced that “with the help of animal welfare associations involved in this same goal we will be able to control these colonies so that all citizens can live together in harmony.”
