Gas explosion in San Fulgencio

A 70-year-old man has suffered serious injuries in an explosion caused by a gas leak in San Fulgencio. The blast caused by the butane in a stove caused a fire and serious damage to two houses in the Marina del Mar urbanization, Urb La Marina.
The man suffered severe burns to more than 50% of his body after the explosion which occurred at around 10pm on Thursday night.
Fire crews from Almoradí and Orihuela attended the scene as well as two ambulances. The exact cause of the blast is investigated but initial speculation from the fire department points to a butane cylinder fuelled gas heater, typical of many Costa Blanca homes in winter.
The man was rushed to hospital and is now being treated at the burns unit of Hospital La Fe de Valéncia. A 75-year-old woman was brought to Torrevieja hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.
The explosion caused considerable damage to the man’s house and the neighbouring house.
