Paseo de La Glea reopens

Ángel Noguera, the Orihuela Councillor for Infrastructure, has announced that the department has completed the repairs to the Paseo de La Glea in Orihuela Costa. These works have been carried out as a result of the terrible damage inflicted by the 2019 DANA.
This final phase has taken one month to complete, at a cost of €72,003.28. The projects include: the building of a block wall that gives continuity to the existing one, filling the existing tunnels and paving the promenade, the sidewalks and the road, both in the damaged part and on the existing one. The drinking water fountain and public lighting have been replaced, as have the horizontal and vertical signage and provision of street furniture.
The Councillor explained that the La Glea promenade is once again consistent with the mouth of the Nacimiento River and has pedestrian walkways.
The is currently no traffic allowed along the paseo as this is the responsibility of the General Directorate of Coasts of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the body will not allow the city council to reorganise the traffic flow through Avenida de la Adelfas.
Ángel Noguera said: “The Orihuela City Council has restored the surroundings of the mouth of the Nacimiento River at La Glea beach. We are liaising with Costas in regard to the repair or replacement of the road to allow traffic flow along the promenade on the Nacimiento River. It was initially denied because it was in an area of ‘maritime-terrestrial public domain’, but a claim has been filed with a possible dispute if Costas does not allow us to recover the road at the mouth of the Nacimiento River.”
The Orihuela City Council stance is based on the special urban planning of the “Campoamor Tourist Centre” approved by a 1969 government decree where this road is located. This planning is prior to the demarcation of the Coasts in that area, and was declared “of public interest”, which is why it is estimated that the road and the stretch of promenade should be able to be replaced. At the same time, action has been taken to clean and adapt the banks of the Nacimiento River at its mouth.
