Local Police of Pilar de la Horadada found more than five thousand cannabis plants and several bags of buds ready for sale in two old agricultural greenhouses adapted for the illegal cultivation in the northwest of the municipality. The discovery of this plantation on almost a thousand square meters, was made by chance – and a keen sense of smell.
A regular patrol runs through the Pinar de Campoverde urbanisation and had been detecting the strong characteristic smell of marijuana for some time. The nasty niff seemed to come from an old greenhouse agricultural facility next to the CV-925, between the Lo Romero golf course and the first roundabout from Pinar de Campoverde.
The Local Police patrol stopped the vehicle to inspect the area and noticed movement inside the greenhouse – the Civil Guard, which has a barracks located about ten kilometres away, did not have a patrol out at at that time, so the officers acted alone. When they approached the access they gave the warning shout of “Police!!” and at least four people fled from the farm and managed to escape on a pre-prepared route.
Inside they found a huge quantity of cannabis plants – 5,012 to be exact and two bags with more than two kilos of buds prepared for sale. On Sunday the Local Police returned to continue their investigation on this plantation and to secure the area and found two other large sacks full of buds with a weight yet to be determined.
The people in charge of the cultivation lived next to the greenhouse – the Local Police surprised them when they were eating. Surprisingly, this greenhouse is located next to a very busy road – which connects the urban area of Pilar de la Horadada with one of its most populated urbanisations – and is very visible, although with the advantage of going unnoticed among the hundreds of terraces under plastic, which are common in this area of the west of the municipality.
