Responsible waste disposal during the pandemic

The Councillor for Street Cleaning, Dámaso Aparicio, has re-launched the services that were put on hold during the first weeks of confinement, such as the collection service of furniture and household goods on public roads.
This service has been resumed since Monday and to request it, prior notice will be mandatory so that the collection point is registered. The Councillor explained that “all the items deposited will be disinfected and collected after 72 hours following the safety recommendations for the workers who provide the service.”
Requests for collection of large household items from Orihuela Costa need to be made by phone call to 96 607 61 00 – Extension. 4513. The deposit will be made according to the organisational chart established for each area and will be collected on the third day of your deposit.
However, if people do not wish to 3 days for collection, the Department of Street Cleaning has provisionally opened the municipal drop-off point located in the Polígono Puente Alto on Wednesdays from 9am to 11:30am; Thursdays from 6pm to 8:30pm and Saturdays from 9am to 11:30am.
In order to take unwanted furniture and large household items to this facility, it will be necessary to request an appointment on 96 530 61 78 and once there, you will need to present formal identification to prove you live in the municipality of Orihuela deeds of the local property where you live.
The service is provided for the deposit of household goods and household appliances for individuals, its use is not authorised for companies, for rubble deposits, sanitary ware or works remains.
The Councillor assured people that “throughout the municipality, since the start of the state of alarm and until it ends, the external washing and disinfection of rubbish containers and their location is being carried out so that citizens can approach without fear to deposit their garbage, into the containers specified for each type of waste”.
Used gloves and masks
The Councillor for Emergencies Víctor Valverde discussed the problem of people throwing used gloves and masks on the ground becuase “they are not recyclable, whether they are made of paper, plastic or cloth.” Once these items have been used (gloves and masks) “they should be deposited with the rest of the garbage in wastebaskets or rubbish containers. Never thrown on the floor, to avoid possible Coronavirus contagions in the rest of the population since this material could be contaminated,” Councillor Valverde said and called for citizen responsibility and collaboration so that this material is removed correctly.
Pet owners are also obliged to collect their pets droppings and to guide their pets to the edge of the pavement, the part closest to the curb to avoid hygiene problems. It is also advisable to dilute the area once the ‘poop has been scooped’ with a little soapy water to avoid leaving urine stains on the sidewalks.
