A 39 year old man has been arrested in Torrevieja after he turned himself in at the Guardia Civil barracks in the town. The man is believed to have confessed to the killing of his partner, a 35 year old woman, when he presented himself at the station several hours after the attack.
Police sources revealed that the incident occurred late on Friday night and into the early hours of Saturday morning. Reports revealed that the neighbours heard a commotion starting at around 11pm on Friday night until around half past one in the morning. Neighbours also said that they rang the doorbell of the house, on Torrevieja’s Calle Concordia but got no answer. At around half six in the morning, the man is said to have handed himself in to the Guardia Civil. Officers immediately went to the couple’s home where they found the woman’s body.
According to reports, the man, of Spanish nationality, had been reported for domestic violence in the past by a previous partner with whom he has a child.
The victim, a 35 year old woman, is said to have worked at a local supermarket and had a three year old daughter with her alleged killer. The child is believed to have been at another address with relatives on the night in question. There is no record that the deceased filed any previous complaint against her partner.
At the time of going to press, no further details of the incident had been revealed. More will be known once the forensic report is issued after the autopsy of the victim’s body has been carried out by the Judicial Police Team of the Torrevieja Guardia Civil.
Reports also claim that that the victim’s family knew little or nothing about her partner, despite them having been living together for three years. They didn’t know if he had a job, or any specific information about his background. Initial reports from local residents on Saturday suggested that neighbours had called the police before, but not this time.
Throughout Sunday morning, dozens of the victim’s family and friends visited her home to offer comfort to her immediate family and express their outrage at the killing. Several bouquets of flowers were left at the woman’s door in her memory. Around 500 people, including representatives of Torrevieja town hall, gathered on Sunday for a minute’s silence in memory of the victim.
The murder is the second domestic violence killing in the Alicante province in 2021 and the fifth so far this year in the Valencian Community. The woman is the 41st victim of fatal domestic violence in Spain, with 26 children left without a parent this year because of gender violence.
