The Councillor for Sports of Los Montesinos, Ana Belén Juárez, announced the 20th edition of the Los Montesinos 8-a-side Soccer Tournament ‘No to Drugs’, which is set to be held from June 16 to 19 at Los Montesinos municipal soccer pitch.
Councillor Juárez that that the tournament, one of the oldest in Vega Baja, is being resumed after not being able to hold it in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. She said that “it is a joy to be able to present it again since it has always been a fixture at the time of closing the season for all the teams with base categories of Vega Baja and surroundings of the province of Alicante and Region of Murcia.”
The tournament, organized jointly by the Montesinos Sports Club and Los Montesinos Department of Sports, this year will feature categories for all agegroups such as querubín, prebenjamín, benjamín, alevín, infantil and cadet as well as a category for female teams. With regard to women in soccer, Juárez stated that “we want to promote this category not only due to the great current boom in women’s soccer – especially in the Community and our Region – but also because of our commitment to breaking stereotypes and promoting egalitarian sport” and as such, to encourage participation, the registration fee for girls’ teams will be half price.
The president of Club Deportivo Montesinos, Alfredo Macia García, highlighted the importance of practicing sports at a grassroots level, “because it helps develop the physical, motor and mental spheres and generate ethical attitudes and promote teamwork.”
All preliminary matches will be held on June 16 and 17, while on June 18 and 19 there will be competition throughout the day for the final phase of the tournament before the grand finals on Sunday.
