Orihuela requests ‘Blue Path’ status for Cabo Roig

Ángel Noguera, Councillor for Infrastructure, has announced that Orihuela has applied for Sendero Azul (Blue Path) status for the Paseo Cabo Roig, which runs along the coast between La Caleta and Cala Capitán.
This municipal initiative is a joint initiative between Miguel Hernández University, the FAOC (Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa-Alicante) and the Litoral Ecological Institute.
Ángel Noguera said: “This initiative is aimed at the recovery of coastal paths to turn them into valuable spaces for environmental education and the development of sustainable activities that bring our visitors closer to the environmental and heritage values of the surroundings of the Blue Flag beaches.”
Luisa Boné, Councillor for Beaches, has expressed her full support, and explained that initiative “was born from the 11 Blue Flags that the 11 beaches of Orihuela have, since it is necessary to have the Blue Flags to be able to progress to the Blue Paths”.
The “Paseo Cabo Roig” is of great interest due to the geological materials that make up the cliffs and beaches, as well as its considerable historical and archaeological value, such as the Torre de Cabo Roig, military watchtower from the 16th Century, listed as a ‘Site of Cultural Interest’.
Throughout the entire walk people can enjoy the seascape, from Cabo Roig to La Manga del Mar Menor and Isla Grosa, observing the shadows in the water of the Posidonia Oceánica meadows, as well as the native and endemic vegetation, fauna and flora adapted to the coastal environments, as well as numerous species of seabirds.
To this Sendero Azul project, others will be added, such as the Nacimiento River, with the aim of providing the coast with a new attraction to visit Orihuela Costa at any time of the year.
